Week 7: Dealing with the Blocking Wall of Learner's Autonomy

After reading some articles on learner autonomy  i realize that making the learner can be said as the ultimate goals of teaching. Maybe, in Bloom's taxonomy we can say that learner's autonomy as the creating skills that students can achieve. I understand that sometimes the given curriculum does not provide enough space to stimulate learner autonomy. Even, the system such as curriculum and decided learning objectives could be the blocking wall for building autonomy of the learners. Just like the little baby, if the parents give more freedom to express his or her felling, he or she can be surprisingly very creative and brainy.

To implement the learner autonomy concept, I will discuss more with my students before, while, and after the class about what they want to learn, how do they want to learn, and what do they think about their own learning process. I just fell in love with the padlet/wall wisher website that can be one of the tools to create interactivity and more expression for me and my students.

I wish my student can share anything such as link, file, video, audio, or anything without any blocking wall with this tool. Finally, I wish that they will be long-life autonomous learner who are creative and expressive in the same time.

  1. Dear Herman,

You have written a heartwarming blog this week. I am moved. " That the learner is the ultimate goal of teaching; sometimes the given curriculum does not provide enough space to stimulate learner autonomy;the system can be blocking walls for learning." These and many more need thorough analysis and consideration. Your metaphor is awesome, the "baby thing" speaks so much.

Padlet for me is intriguing, it confused me at first. I began liking it after exploring and experimenting for sometime. I will also try it with my students. Now they are focusing in blogging though.

I was thinking of using padlet in communicating with the administrative council here in the university. Any suggestion?

I share the same wish you have for your students and for us also.

    Hugs,

    Sonia

    1. Dear Sonia

Thanks for your motivating feedbacks and excellent opinion. I just want to remind that the learner should be the focus while the tools will assist. Padlet could be a good tools to share and give opinion although not all people are able to speak up their mind. Wish you all the best Sonia. I keep considering my self as 'baby' in learning. Therefore, please keep sharing with me.

      Hugs,

      Herman

  2. Hello Herman,

How nicely interpreted your thoughts about autonomous learning.I too admit the facts you mentioned here:

"sometimes the given curriculum does not provide enough space to stimulate learner autonomy"

"learning objectives could be the blocking wall for building autonomy of the learners"

Here I want to ask a question,"How the traditional mind set of the teacher, parent and students will effect the autonomous learning?"

    Warm Regards,

    Vinay

    1. Hi Vinay

Thanks for your comments. Your question is pretty hard since it is also happening to my students. However, I believe that the learners this present are very much exposed to the technology and information. The negative effect of teacher, parents, and students traditional mind set will be gradually decreased.

      Thanks Vinay

      Cheers

  3. Hello,

    Thank You

    1. Hi Basu,

Thank you very much for reading my blog. Your comment reminds me that all learning theories are connected to each other. Therefore, we always have to use our prior knowledge while learning new things.

      Good luck Basu

  4. Hello Herman,
I agree with you that learner autonomy is a very important factor in the student's overall development. Self-esteem and desire to learn seem to be the most crucial elements not only in the process of learning the second language but in the whole development of a person and the trainings provided in the language classrooms have a significant impact on the social nature of the learner. Conversely, a lack of self-esteem and lack of motivation can negatively affect students' future choices and decisions about their future life. It's certainly something that shouldn't be neglected.

    1. Dear Alicjia,

Thank you very much for writing on my blog. You idea about self motivation and self esteem of the learners is a good reminder that whatever the technology we use, the humanistic approach should be considered. Thank you for sharing and hope we all can use the technology wisely in the humanistic ways.

      best regards

  5. Hello, Hernan
    How are you doing?

This week's technological tool WALLWISHER (or PADLET) was fantastic. It is like having an online bulletinboard. I think this is a free and easy option to encourage our students to discuss, write and share opinions and do research and post their links. Talking about learner autonomy, I believe that it is very important and necessary to promote and encourage our students to become autonomous learners so that they will be doers or builders of their own knowledge.
Hernan, please don’t forget to send Sonia and me your email in order to be able to share our drafts. My email is juancarlos20ec@gmail.com

    Sincerely,
    JC

    1. Hello JC,

Thanks for stopping by at my blog. Online bulletin board is a perfect analogy of padlet I guess. Your terms is very inspiring "the doers and builders of their own knowledge". I hope I can be a good assistance for students in doing the job.
Thanks for sharing and working together for the final project.

      keep in touch

    1. Dear Rana,

Thank you very much for your comments.
I think we have the same problem about the curriculum. However, I believe we the teacher can have our own way to bend the rules and meet the need of our students.
I rarely read your comments and participations. I hope we can share more.

      best regards

      Herman
